A collaborative study conducted by Lok Nayak Hospital and ICMR suggested that the five confirmed cases of monkeypox in Delhi show a prevalence of underdiagnosed monkeypox infection at the community level. The study revealed that all the cases were mild and had a good recovery. However, it also emphasized the need for active surveillance of the MPXV in the high-risk population, such as men having sex with men and female sex workers.

Dr. Suresh Kumar, Director, Lok Nayak Hospital, stated that the study showed no secondary complications or sexually transmitted infections in the five cases, except for Hepatitis B in one case. He added that among the five patients from the national capital, including a 32-year-old woman, only one was from Delhi, while the remaining four were of African origin living in the city. Also, the patients admitted to Delhi did not have any immediate travel connections to or from abroad.

The study described the clinico-demographic and virological follow-up, and the management office confirmed monkeypox cases from Delhi without any international travel history. In the study, the samples of the oropharyngeal swab, nasopharyngeal swabs, blood, serum, urine, and various lesion specimens were collected every fourth day of follow-up post onset day of illness. All five cases presented with mild to moderate grade intermittent fever, myalgia, and lesions on the genitals, groins, lower limbs, trunk, and upper limbs. Four out of five cases had nontender firm lymphadenopathy—immune system glands that usually enlarge in response to a bacterial or viral infection. In India, 10 cases of monkeypox infection have been reported so far, including 5 from Kerala.
